Never before in restorative dentistry, have so
many different materials been presented as alternatives for cavity
restorations. First introduced as anterior restorative materials,
resin composites are being used, more and more, for posterior restorations.
Because of the considerable progress in adhesive technology and
resin-based materials, the concept of aesthetic dentistry has widely
changed. Recently, nanocomposites and the one step bonding were
marketed, thus enlarging the dental armamentarium.
A successful composite restoration starts with an adequate selection
of the resin-based material. A better understanding of tooth-colour
characteristics and morphology, as well as materials composition
and selection are of paramount importance to achieve optimal aesthetic
restorations. Other factors such as the age of the patient, the
size and the location of the cavity must be considered. Bonding
technique is the second element conditioning the success of a restoration.
The cavity is filled using Incremental or layering technique, combining
different shades of resin composites.
The light curing procedure, often forgotten or slightly mentioned,
is the third and very important part of a successful direct composite
restoration.
Last but not least, the regular maintenance and polishing of resin
composite restorations will ensure better aesthetics and longer
longevity.
Treatment modalities of composite restorations will be presented
through clinical cases highlighting the key steps of recent restoration
procedure.
